Sex positions to experiment with: 7 positions to liven up your sex life
Not acrobatics from magazines, but positions that change what matters – the angle, the pace, and who has free hands. For each one, we explain why it works.
Most couples have two or three positions they repeat for years. Not because they would not enjoy trying other things, but because these positions feel safe: we know what to expect, and no one has to feel awkward. The problem is that the positions used most often frequently overlook what matters most to women. According to an extensive Indiana University survey from 2018, only 18% of women reach orgasm from intercourse alone; another 37% need direct clitoral stimulation, and a third of women said that orgasm is significantly better with it.
That is why this list does not rank positions by how exotic they look. It ranks them according to three things: whether they provide better contact with the clitoris, who controls the pace, and whether either partner has a free hand – or room for a small vibrator.

1Improved missionary position (CAT)
- The female partner lies on her back with her legs straight or slightly bent.
- The male partner lies above her and moves 5 to 10 cm higher than usual. He supports his weight on his elbows.
- Instead of thrusting, both partners rock slowly – she moves upward, he moves downward – while maintaining constant contact.
Everyone knows the missionary position, but few people know its version called the Coital Alignment Technique. The difference is small but significant: the man moves a few centimetres higher, so his pelvis is above his partner’s pelvis, and instead of thrusting, both partners move slowly up and down in a rocking motion. The technique was described in the 1980s by psychotherapist Edward Eichel, and later small studies linked it to more frequent orgasms for women during intercourse.
Why it works: in the usual missionary position, the bodies make contact at the wrong point. Moving upward redirects pressure to the clitoral area, and the rhythm changes from fast thrusting to smooth rocking – which is much closer to what women need for arousal.
2Woman on top
- The male partner lies on his back with a pillow under his head.
- The female partner sits astride him facing him, with her knees on either side of his hips.
- She leans forward and braces herself with her hands on the bed or on his chest. She controls both the angle and the pace.
The most commonly recommended position for women, and for good reason: the female partner controls the angle, depth, and pace. When she leans forward, she rubs her pelvis against her partner; when she straightens up, the angle changes. She does not need to explain anything – she only needs to move in whatever way feels good to her.
Why it works: control reduces performance pressure. Many women describe being unable to “switch off their minds” – and this happens especially when they have to wait and see what the other person will do.
3Spooning
- They both lie on the same side, facing the same direction.
- The partner approaches from behind so that the bodies touch along their entire length.
- The partner slightly bends her upper knee. The partner has his upper hand free.
Both lie on their sides, one behind the other. The position is slow, quiet, and intimate - ideal in the morning when you are tired or when one of you is not feeling your best. It requires no strength, and no one is "on display."
Why it works: it is one of the few positions in which the man naturally has a free hand exactly where it is needed. And because the bodies touch along their entire length, many couples describe it as the most intimate.
4Lotus
- The partner sits cross-legged on the bed and can lean back against the headboard.
- The partner sits in his lap facing him and wraps her legs around his waist.
- They embrace and move with a slow swaying motion, not thrusts.
The man sits cross-legged, while the partner sits in his lap facing him and wraps her legs around his waist. Movement is minimal - more swaying than thrusting. This is not a position for quick sex, but for a long one.
Why it works: the bodies are completely joined, the faces are close together, and no one dominates. For couples who feel that sex has become routine, this is often the biggest difference - not physically, but in how close they feel.
5At the edge of the bed
- The partner lies on her back with her hips right at the edge of the bed.
- The partner stands or kneels in front of the bed - depending on how high the bed is.
- If the angle is not right, place a pillow under her hips, or have the partner kneel on a pillow.
The partner lies on her back at the edge of the bed, while the partner stands or kneels in front of her. A simple change of position that changes surprisingly much - especially for couples of different heights.
Why it works: the man has a stable stance and both hands free, while the woman can lie completely relaxed. The angle can be adjusted by changing the height of the bed or using a pillow.

- The partner lies on her stomach and places one or two pillows under her hips.
- Keep the legs together or only slightly apart.
- The partner is above her, supporting his weight on his hands, and the movements are short and slow.
The partner lies on her stomach with a pillow under her hips, while the other partner is above her, supporting himself on his hands. Her legs are together or only slightly apart. The position seems simple, but for many women it is surprisingly intense.
Why it works: the pillow under the pelvis creates constant pressure on the clitoral area with every movement - without anyone having to do anything with their hands.
7Reverse cowgirl
- The partner lies on his back.
- The partner sits astride him with her back facing him, her knees on either side of his hips.
- She supports herself with her hands on his thighs or on the bed and starts very slowly.
Like position no. 2, but the partner sits facing away from the other partner. The angle is different, and so is the sensation, and for some women this is the only position in which they can fully focus on themselves - precisely because no one is looking them in the face.
Why it works: the woman has complete control and privacy at the same time. The angle during penetration also changes, making it a good position for discovering what feels right.
How to experiment without it being awkward
The biggest obstacle isn't physics, but conversation. A couple who have lived together for years are often embarrassed to suggest something new - what if the other person takes it as criticism? Three things that help:
Choose together. Send your partner this article and each choose one position. Neither suggests; both choose.
One new thing per evening. Don't change everything at once. One new position, with the rest as usual - that way, the experiment won't feel like a test.
Laughter is okay. Not every position works the first time. Couples who can laugh about it experiment more often and for longer.
And if you want to start very simply, prepare the evening in advance: soft lighting, a massage candle, and no rush. The position is only the second step.
